# AI Overviews — google ai overviews

AI Overviews are Google's AI-generated answers, composed from web sources and shown above the traditional results. They are the largest AI answer surface on the web: a Similarweb analysis put them on 43% of Google searches as of July 2026, up from 15% a year earlier.

Coverage at that scale makes the citation mix consequential. Ahrefs' July 2026 rankings put YouTube first by mention share in AI Overviews at 21.1%, then Reddit (18.5%), Facebook (10.7%), Google itself (7.1%) and Instagram (5.8%) — a concentration in large user-generated and Google-hosted properties. Writesonic measured AI Overviews omitting the source brand in 41% of citations, so citation counts and named visibility are not the same number.

The surface also keeps annexing adjacent real estate. A Top Stories carousel now runs inside AI Overviews, appearing on roughly 15.5% of U.S. and 17.5% of U.K. news searches — which is why Search Console's AI opt-out has a cost analysts flag but Google has not confirmed: excluding content from AI Overviews may exclude it from Top Stories there too. In the UK, the CMA has made an opt-out mandatory, covering training, fine-tuning and grounding alike.

Provenance is a live question. Google's support documentation states that signed-in users' search interactions help improve Search's generative AI models. And when a contested race-based answer surfaced, Google said the system was picking up particular web pages for that specific search — the operator attributing an answer to indexed pages rather than the model.

One analysis finds using the opt-out may also cost Top Stories placement inside AI Overviews; Google has not confirmed the link.
