Google has confirmed that AI Overviews can expand to their full length automatically for some queries, without the "Show more" click, pushing traditional results further down the page — a test Search Engine Land and consultant Chris Long first flagged as unconfirmed on August 27. A Google spokesperson told Search Engine Land the overview "may dynamically expand for topics where our systems determine it's most useful for people." Google said the expansion cancels if a person has already scrolled past the overview.

Why it matters: Google's own explanation names an undisclosed, systems-determined trigger, so publishers still can't predict which queries lose the click that used to separate a skimmable AI Overview from a full AI Mode-style answer.

## What this answers

**Does Google's AI Overview still have a Show more button?**

Not always — Google has confirmed AI Overviews can now expand to their full length automatically for some queries, skipping the click, per Search Engine Land.

**How does Google decide which queries get an automatically expanded AI Overview?**

Google says it expands "for topics where our systems determine it's most useful for people," without disclosing what share of queries qualify or the criteria behind it.
