A new arXiv paper analyzing 17,211 citation instances across 6,356 source domains on 10 AI-search platforms finds that each platform's top 20 cited domains account for 20.5% to 70.8% of its citations, and that 15 of 22 publishing platforms tied to those domains have low or medium barriers to posting. In follow-up experiments, the researchers got 8 of 10 platforms to cite a fabricated concept within seven days of posting it on preferred domains, and a $14 commercial GEO purchase led one platform to cite planted content within an hour.

Why it matters: It reframes AI-search citation selection as a security question: if posting on a handful of easy-access domains can reliably seed what a platform cites, the gap between ordinary publishing and influencing AI answers is smaller than assumed.

## What this answers

**Can AI search platforms be manipulated into citing fake content?**

Yes — a study found that posting content on easy-to-access platforms got 8 of 10 AI-search platforms to cite a fabricated concept within a week, and a $14 commercial GEO purchase got one platform citing planted content within an hour.

**How concentrated are AI search citations by domain?**

Highly — a study of 17,211 citations across 10 AI-search platforms found each platform's top 20 cited domains capture 20.5% to 70.8% of its citations.
