Google said in a Nov 3 post that Google Search, Gemini, Gemini Notebook and Gemini in Classroom will be "entirely off" for K-12 student accounts until school administrators turn them on, citing requests from schools, teachers, researchers and policymakers. Google gave no start date and said it will share specifics with schools in the coming months. It is also adding Guided Learning to Search for student accounts, which coaches students through homework-type questions step by step rather than giving the answer, with a pilot in select U.S. schools starting later this month, per Google and Search Engine Roundtable.

Why it matters: Google is making AI-era Search a switch schools must turn on rather than one students get by default, which sets a precedent for how administrators can gate answer surfaces, and puts a step-by-step answer mode into Search itself.
