Reddit's DMCA suit against Perplexity, SerpApi survives dismissal bid

A federal judge in the Southern District of New York denied Perplexity and SerpApi’s motions to dismiss Reddit’s DMCA anti-circumvention claims, per Ars Technica, allowing Reddit’s suit over alleged scraping of its content to proceed. The ruling lands just days after a different judge dismissed most of Google’s near-identical DMCA claims against SerpApi in a separate case.

Why it matters: Two judges reached opposite results on nearly identical DMCA theories against the same scraper within the same fortnight, leaving the legal exposure for AI answer engines that rely on scraped data still unsettled.

The record: PerplexityAI training & copyright litigation
