Anything Engine Optimization The rolling record of the AI-search industry.

The record

Perplexity

What is Perplexity?

The citation-forward answer engine — a bellwether for how AI search credits (and pays) the open web.

Perplexity's record here is mostly litigation, with two measurement datapoints attached. In the Southern District of New York, a judge denied Perplexity and SerpApi's motions to dismiss Reddit's DMCA anti-circumvention claims — days after a different judge dismissed most of Google's near-identical DMCA claims against the same scraper. Days later the Ninth Circuit reversed the preliminary injunction barring Perplexity's agentic browser Comet from Amazon.com, holding Perplexity unlikely to violate the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act because the user, not Perplexity, directs the Assistant's access. On behavior: Writesonic measured Perplexity omitting the source brand in 52% of citations, the highest of seven engines tested, and Seer Interactive found it the least recency-bound of three engines tested.
