The wire's largest answer surface, and the one where scale and dispute arrive together. A Similarweb analysis put AI Overviews on 43% of Google searches in July 2026, up from 15% a year earlier. Ahrefs' July citation rankings show where that attention lands: YouTube at 21.1% mention share, then Reddit (18.5%), Facebook (10.7%), Google itself (7.1%) and Instagram (5.8%). Google has said on the record that Reddit gets no special preference, and separately that a contested race-based answer came from particular web pages picked up for that specific search — the engine attributing its output to indexed pages rather than the model. The surface keeps absorbing adjacent real estate: a Top Stories carousel now runs inside AI Overviews on roughly 15.5% of U.S. news searches, so Search Console's AI opt-out may cost publishers that placement too.
