Bartz v. Anthropic settlement effective, payouts due Sept. 17

The Bartz v. Anthropic book-piracy class settlement became effective Aug. 20, 2026, the day after the deadline to appeal the settlement itself passed, per Chat GPT Is Eating the World, which read the settlement agreement’s terms. The two appeals filed since challenge only attorneys’ fee awards denied to two law firms, which the agreement excludes from affecting the Effective Date. That date starts a 28-day clock for payouts of roughly $3,000 per work to class members, putting distribution around Sept. 17, 2026.

Why it matters: With payouts now tied to a real date, the Bartz settlement moves from legal precedent to an actual price on training AI models on pirated books — a data point the wire's other pending AI-training suits don't yet have.
