Google drops Gemini Flash from free tier, Pro from AI Plus

Google will limit free Gemini app users to the lightweight Flash-Lite model starting October 9, cutting off their access to Flash, per a Google Help Center update first reported by PPC Land. AI Plus subscribers, who pay $4.99 a month, keep Flash but lose Pro on a date Google says it will announce to each subscriber by email; AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers see no change. Google’s documentation gives no reason for the tightening, and the compute-based usage limits tied to each tier — described only as multiples of a “standard” allowance — remain unpublished in absolute terms.

Why it matters: Google is now gating its strongest reasoning models by subscription tier rather than feature availability, a sign that compute cost, not product parity, is what decides how deep a free user can go into Gemini.
