Profound ties missing ChatGPT UTM tags to Intelligent UI
Profound’s research blog attributes ChatGPT’s disappearing UTM tags to the rollout of its Intelligent UI answer format rather than a bug — a different explanation than the GPT-6-timing theory the wire covered earlier today. The company says the share of ChatGPT answers carrying at least one tagged citation link fell from about 98% on October 8 to 75% on October 9 and 66% by October 14, tracking a rise in Intelligent UI’s share of answers from 2% to 26% to roughly 35% over the same three dates. Profound recommends marketers track visibility and citation data in AI answers rather than referral-traffic reports, which it says the tag loss is undercounting.
Why it matters: If the tag loss traces to a specific answer format rather than a glitch, the referral-traffic gap now showing up in site analytics will keep widening as that format's share of ChatGPT answers grows, not self-correct.
