BrightEdge: Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT cite different kinds of holiday pages

BrightEdge compared the top 50 cited rows per domain on ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews for holiday-shopping prompts (Black Friday, Cyber Monday, Christmas, Thanksgiving) across four US retailers, pulled October 14, 2026 from its AI Hyper Cube. ChatGPT sent 51.5% of its citation weight to newsroom and customer-support pages versus 18.1% for AI Overviews, while AI Overviews put 64.6% of its citations on commercial product pages versus 35.4% for ChatGPT — a 12.5x gap on help-page citations in ChatGPT’s favor. BrightEdge also found ChatGPT’s holiday prompts average 6.0 words and read as full logistics questions, versus 4.4-word keyword queries on Google.

Why it matters: The two engines are pulling from structurally different parts of a retailer's site, so a page built to rank for commercial intent can still miss ChatGPT's citations, which skew toward newsroom and help content.
