Google drops quota-increase form from Indexing API docs

Google updated its Indexing API documentation on October 16 (spotted via a changelog diff, date approximate) to remove the form publishers used to request a quota increase, along with language describing the approval process for exceeding the default limit — per Search Engine Roundtable, which compared the before-and-after text. A developer quoted in that piece tested a new service account afterward and still got the standard 200-publish-requests-per-day default, suggesting the change trims documentation rather than the quota system itself.

The cleanup comes after months of publisher complaints that the approval pathway wasn’t working: Search Engine Journal reported in September that SEO consultants tracking job board applications — the API’s primary intended users, alongside broadcast-event pages — had seen none approved since October 2025, with some operators describing six-to-nine-month waits with no response at all. Google’s own changelog entry does not mention that backlog.

Why it matters: Google trimming the quota-increase pathway from its own docs, without addressing the backlog of unanswered requests publishers have reported for months, suggests the approval process itself — not just the paperwork describing it — may be winding down.
