Chartbeat: Google traffic to publishers fell 40% in a year

Google Search referral traffic to publishers fell 40.2% year-over-year from July 2025 to July 2026, up sharply from a 21.9% decline the prior year, according to Chartbeat’s 2026 Publisher Playbook, drawn from two years of data across Chartbeat’s client network. Google Search’s own share of pageviews fell from about 9% in July 2024 to 5% by July 2026, a decline Chartbeat calls “nearly 46%” over two years; Google Discover’s year-over-year decline widened too, from 6.6% to 34.3%, per Search Engine Journal’s reporting on the same report. Chartbeat also found referral traffic from AI platforms grew eightfold over two years but still amounts to just 0.01% of publisher traffic, and that AI referrals actually declined across ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Copilot and Gemini over 2026 — meaning AI traffic has not come close to offsetting what Search once sent. Search Engine Journal notes the 0.01% figure is hard to compare with Axios’s March report, also from Chartbeat data, that chatbots sent under 1% of publisher referrals; the playbook doesn’t explain the gap.

Why it matters: Google Search's year-over-year decline across Chartbeat's network nearly doubled, from 21.9% to 40.2%, while AI referrals stayed at 0.01% of traffic. So far, AI platforms are replacing none of what Search stopped sending. The figures come from a vendor whose business depends on publishers having traffic to measure.

  • 2026-10-17: This item originally said small publishers lost about 60% of their search referral traffic, medium publishers 47% and large publishers 22%, and attributed that breakdown to Chartbeat's 2026 Publisher Playbook. The playbook gives no breakdown by publisher size. The 60% figure comes from earlier Chartbeat data that Axios reported in March, and Search Engine Journal says the playbook doesn't break down its data by size. The breakdown has been removed from the item, its Q&A and its summary.
