AI shopping agents strain retailers as purchases quadruple

Purchases placed through AI shopping agents are growing about 43% a month and have roughly quadrupled since April, per BrightEdge data cited by The Wall Street Journal — yet only about 3% of the ecommerce companies BrightEdge works with let an agent complete a transaction. The Journal reports retailers are losing visibility into who initiated a purchase, what the agent compared before choosing a product, and why, complicating marketing measurement, while purchase errors by agents risk raising returns and chargebacks. BrightEdge CEO Jim Yu told the Journal agent adoption is “more complicated for marketers, but that also makes it very interesting.”

Why it matters: Agent-driven shopping is scaling faster than retailer readiness to support it, and the purchases it generates arrive without the customer and campaign data a marketer would normally use to measure what worked.
