Google AI Overviews now reach 2.5 billion people a month
DataReportal’s Digital 2027 report, published today by Meltwater and We Are Social, estimates Google AI Overviews reach more than 2.5 billion people monthly — applying Similarweb’s finding that over 4 in 10 Google searches now show an AI Overview to Google’s 2.6 billion-plus monthly search audience. The same report finds search engines still have the edge for commercial intent: online adults are 74% more likely to visit a search engine than a stand-alone AI platform when researching a brand.
Why it matters: The same report makes both points at once -- AI Overviews now touch a majority of Google's audience, but stand-alone AI platforms still trail search by a wide margin for commercial research -- which argues against treating 'AI adoption' as a single trend line.
