Two studies: AI referral traffic converts better than organic, but stays tiny
Two independent GA4 analyses published this week find AI referral traffic converts at a premium over Google organic search but remains a small fraction of its volume. Marie Haynes, analyzing 145 million sessions across 100 websites over 12 months, found ChatGPT traffic equaled 0.62% of Google organic volume (0.73% for all LLMs combined), with ChatGPT converting at 13.8% against organic’s 3.02% — yet Google organic still generated 96.5% of total conversions across the sites tracked. Separately, SEO Works measured 72,095 AI referral sessions against 2.8 million organic sessions across 95 sites from September 2025 to August 2026, finding organic delivered 39 times the traffic of AI assistants while AI referrals converted at 7.18% against organic’s 6.08%.
Why it matters: Both studies land on the same split — AI referral traffic converts at a premium but hasn't reached the scale to matter for most sites' conversion totals — which cuts against the loudest GEO pitches without dismissing the channel outright.
The record: ChatGPT
