AI Mode — google ai mode

AI Mode is Google's conversational search surface: a full AI-generated answer with citations, ads and app integrations, running alongside classic results. Datos and SparkToro measured it at 0.13% of U.S. search-related visits in Q2 2026 — heavily instrumented, lightly used.

The gap between instrumentation and use is the surface's defining fact. Similarweb counted AI Mode visits rising from 126 million in June 2025 to 279 million in May 2026; Datos and SparkToro put it at 0.13% of U.S. search-related visits (0.29% in the EU/UK) and describe U.S. usage as plateaued or dipped. Underneath it, Google says Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite is rolling out in Search — and the answer layer keeps becoming an action layer, with Instacart, Canva and YouTube Music connected to it.

What it cites is unusually well documented. Google itself is the second most-cited domain in AI Mode answers, on Google-hosted Business Profile and Product Knowledge Panel cards. A Pillarbase analysis of 15.7 million citations found the passages reused most average 117 words, answer in the first sentence about 80% of the time, are self-contained about 85% of the time, and come 76% of the time from pages already ranking first organically. Writesonic measured AI Mode omitting the source brand in 49% of citations.

The mix moves. Over the 30 days ending July 15, 2026, AI Mode's publisher mentions fell nearly in half while mentions of retailers rose sharply across 15 of 20 verticals, per Kevin Indig's Growth Memo analysis — even as AI Mode's total mention volume contracted 12.9%. Ads, meanwhile, appear on roughly one in three commercial-keyword queries, with advertisers rarely among the cited sources.
