Answer engine

The distinction from a search engine is architectural: a search engine ranks documents and hands the reader a choice; an answer engine reads the documents and hands the reader a conclusion. The line blurs in practice — the major search engines now embed answer layers directly in their results, and the standalone assistants increasingly search the live web before answering.

For anyone who publishes on the web, the change is economic before it is technical. Visibility in a ranked list produced clicks; visibility in a composed answer produces citations, brand mentions, and — disputed, and centrally so — some fraction of the clicks it replaced.
