Time starts selling ads inside its AI-agent-readable markdown pages
Time has converted its web pages into markdown — stripped-down, text-only copies without design or images — to make its content easier for AI crawlers and agents to read, and is now selling ads inside those pages through ad-tech platform Mobian, per Digiday. Ally Bank and the Project Management Institute were among the first advertisers, buying FAQ-formatted, sponsor-labeled placements. Time’s COO said the outlet sees more bot traffic than human traffic on most days, citing TollBit data showing Time draws more AI crawler requests than most of the nearly 7,000 publishers in TollBit’s network.
Why it matters: Publisher monetization is moving from 'block the bots' to 'sell to the bots' — Time is treating AI agent traffic as inventory, not just a threat to referral clicks.
