Google adds AI study tools to Search, Gemini for students
Google rolled out AI-powered study features across Search and Gemini on August 19, timed to the U.S. school year. AI Overviews now renders interactive visuals for study topics (Google’s example: the pH scale) and AI Mode builds tailored follow-up experiences and custom quizzes, per TechCrunch; Gemini gained a dedicated student hub with study notebooks, 3D visualizations, and Gemini Live deep-research reports. Google is also giving eligible U.S. college students a free year of Google AI Pro (normally $19.99/month), and international students in 140+ markets a free year of Google AI Plus, both redeemable through December 31, 2026.
Why it matters: AI Overviews and AI Mode picking up their own interactive study UI — rather than just linking out — is another concrete case of Google keeping a query's follow-through inside its AI surfaces instead of the open web.
