Google confirms AI Overviews now dynamically expand
Google has confirmed that AI Overviews can expand to their full length automatically for some queries, without the “Show more” click, pushing traditional results further down the page — a test Search Engine Land and consultant Chris Long first flagged as unconfirmed on August 27. A Google spokesperson told Search Engine Land the overview “may dynamically expand for topics where our systems determine it’s most useful for people.” Google said the expansion cancels if a person has already scrolled past the overview.
Why it matters: Google's own explanation names an undisclosed, systems-determined trigger, so publishers still can't predict which queries lose the click that used to separate a skimmable AI Overview from a full AI Mode-style answer.
