Google Discover now sends news publishers more than twice what Search does
Across the 400-plus news publishers NewzDash tracks, Google Discover supplied 67.51% of Google traffic in the fourth quarter of 2025 against 27% for Web Search. In 2023 the split ran the other way — Search 51%, Discover 37%. NewzDash CEO John Shehata calls the reversal “the Great Flip.”
The consequence for the practice that goes by editorial SEO is structural rather than tactical. Discover has no queries in it. There is no keyword to research, no position to hold, no query report to read. Two-thirds of a news publisher’s Google traffic now arrives from a feed that decides what to show without anyone having asked it anything.
Where AI answers actually bite, and where they do not. The section-level breakdown is the fact most often lost in coverage of AI and news, this record’s included. In US data Shehata reports AI Overviews triggering on:
- 3-5% of breaking and political news queries
- around 18% of sports queries
- 40-50% of health queries
Exposure to AI answers is a property of the beat, not of news as a category. A political desk and a health desk are in materially different businesses, and a single figure for “news” averages them into something true of neither. Shehata also puts news-seeking on AI platforms at under 5% of users — consistent with the Similarweb finding this record already carries, that 95% of ChatGPT’s users still used Google over the same period.
What that leaves editorial SEO to be. Not post-publication optimization, which the economics no longer support at scale, but a set of decisions made where the story is briefed: what the headline says, how the piece is structured, which surface it is built for. The name survives from a period when Search was the channel. The work has moved.
This publication’s own blind spot, stated plainly. The wire has covered the AI answer layer intensively — who gets cited, by which engine, under what conditions. Searching the corpus for Discover returns 17 items and almost every hit is the ordinary word “discovery.” There is no figure for Discover on /numbers/ and no glossary entry for it. We have been reporting closely on the surface that generates the argument while barely covering the one that generates the traffic. That is a gap in this record, not in the industry’s, and naming it is cheaper than defending it.
The record does hold the adjacent pieces. Google places Top Stories carousels inside AI Overviews on roughly 15.5% of US news searches, so a publisher opting out of AI Overviews may lose the carousel rendered within them. Google now lets publishers embed a Preferred Sources button. The UK CMA’s Publisher Conduct Requirement obliges Google to offer an opt-out covering training, fine-tuning and grounding, with engagement metrics through an accessible platform. Each of those is a lever on the answer layer. None of them touches Discover.
Caveats. NewzDash sells news-SEO tooling and published this analysis itself; the traffic split is Q4 2025 data, and the interview it comes from was conducted in January 2026 and published August 31. Nobody has replicated the split independently. What is not in dispute is the direction: Google’s own Search Console has reported Discover separately since it mattered, and every publisher-side account of the last two years describes the same movement.
Why it matters: The practice named for search optimization now depends mostly on a Google surface with no search queries in it, and this record — which has covered the AI answer layer item by item for six weeks — has almost no coverage of the surface that actually moves publisher traffic.
