EU fines Google €460 million for DMA search self-preferencing
The European Commission fined Alphabet €460 million on July 23, 2026, ruling under Article 6(5) of the Digital Markets Act that Google favored nine of its own services — including Google Maps, flight, hotel, and train booking, and translation — over rivals in search ranking and crawling since March 2024, per PPC Land’s review of the decision (case DMA.100193). Google has 60 days from notification, to roughly September 21, to end the practice, and said it is weighing an appeal against this fine and a separate €430 million Google Play penalty. The decision explicitly excludes AI Overviews; the Commission’s proposals for how DMA rules apply to AI carry no timeline.
Why it matters: It's the EU's first concrete penalty against Google's core search ranking under the DMA, but the explicit exclusion of AI Overviews signals AI-surface self-preferencing remains unregulated territory for now.
