CMA: Google must extend its EU data-portability API to the UK
The UK Competition and Markets Authority imposed a Data Portability Conduct Requirement on Google’s general search services on June 17, 2026 — the same day as the already-covered Fair Ranking requirement — but the decision went largely unremarked until a summary document was added to the CMA’s public register on October 1. The rule, following Google’s October 2025 “strategic market status” designation, orders Google to give authorised third parties free tools to port a UK user’s search data at that user’s request; per the CMA’s decision document, Google may meet it by extending to the UK the Data Portability API it already built for the EU’s Digital Markets Act. The CMA’s consultation proposed, and its final decision retained, a three-month implementation window, putting compliance due around mid-September 2026.
Why it matters: It's the third CMA conduct requirement imposed on Google's search business since June, and the first one Google can largely satisfy by extending compliance work it already did for the EU rather than building new UK-only tooling.
