Google brings Nano Banana 2.1 image model to AI Mode in Search
Google rolled out Nano Banana 2.1, its image generation and editing model, inside AI Mode in Search starting October 6, 2026. The company says the new version improves on prior releases in visual design, mask-based editing, and subject consistency, and it is reachable from the banana icon beneath the search box in the Google app, per Search Engine Roundtable.
Why it matters: Putting an image-generation model directly inside AI Mode turns a search results page into a creation surface, pulling another task away from the open web and into Google's own interface.
