Google adds Gemini 4 Argon to AI Mode's model menu

Google has added Gemini 4 Argon as a selectable model inside AI Mode’s “Ask anything” bar, reachable via the menu’s ”+” icon, per Search Engine Journal. The option is rolling out globally to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers; Google says it improves handling of multi-step tasks and back-and-forth instructions. It’s additive, not a replacement — AI Mode’s default remains a Flash-class model, which Google uses to keep responses fast and costs down at search scale.

Why it matters: AI Mode's first model picker lets Google test whether subscribers will trade its default cost-and-speed tradeoff for a more capable model on complex queries, rather than Google choosing one model for everyone.
