Semrush: Asda's ChatGPT mentions don't match its citations
Semrush’s first UK benchmark of its 2026 AI Visibility Index, unveiled at Spotlight London, tracked 2.5 million UK and 25 million US prompts monthly across ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews over seven months. Tesco ranked 9th among ChatGPT’s most-mentioned UK brands in July but only 25th for citations; Asda ranked 8th for mentions and 606th for citations, per PPC Land’s reporting on the study. Semrush calls the pattern a “One-Way Door”: Ford.com ranked 18th for ChatGPT mentions but 1,055th for citations in July, a gap the report says held across all four platforms. Separately, the four platforms agreed less in the UK than the US on which brands to surface at all — any two shared just 63 to 70 of their top 100 mentioned UK brands, versus 70 to 78 in the US, per Semrush’s own release.
Why it matters: Mentions and citations are often tracked as one metric, but Semrush's gap-sized UK examples show a brand can dominate an AI answer's text while almost never being the linked source behind it — a split worth tracking separately, especially outside the US where the platforms already agree less on what to surface.
