Google's News AI pilot expands past 400 publications
Google’s News AI pilot — a licensing program specific to Google News, distinct from the Search Console-based AI contribution pilot the wire has tracked since September — now counts more than 400 publications worldwide, per Google’s own October 15 announcement. The pilot launched last year with The Washington Post and The Washington Examiner; new partners include Axios, CNN, the Financial Times and Forbes, plus U.S. local publishers Post and Courier, Texas Tribune, Oil City News and Shaw Media. Publishers grant Google enhanced content rights for its AI features and Google pays them, per Reuters (via CNA); neither side has disclosed financial terms.
Why it matters: Google is scaling a paid-licensing structure for AI content rights rather than relying on open crawling, a second payment channel alongside its separate AI-answer contribution pilot — the clearest sign yet that Google expects to keep negotiating content access rather than assuming it by default.
