Google tests Personal Intelligence ads inside AI Mode
Google has started testing ads in AI Mode for users who connect apps through its Personal Intelligence feature, per Search Engine Land — a reversal from January 2026, when a Google spokesperson said the feature would stay ad-free. Personal Intelligence lets AI Mode draw on insights from connected Google apps, like Gmail and Photos, to generate more relevant responses; Google says that same connected-app information may now also help personalize the ads users see, though ads won’t be based directly on the contents of a user’s Gmail inbox or Photos library. Users must opt in to connect their apps and can disconnect at any time; ads will otherwise continue to reflect the user’s query and the AI response’s context, per Google.
Why it matters: Google said in January that Personal Intelligence would stay ad-free; testing ads there now is the kind of reversal that's easy to miss unless someone is tracking what the company said against what it actually ships.
