Analysis: GA4 Direct traffic shows little hidden AI activity

Kevin Indig of Growth Memo analyzed Google Analytics 4 data across 12 websites from January through September 2026 and found that while total Direct traffic rose 140.9%, engaged (non-bot) Direct traffic fell 1.0% over the same period, with only 0.003% of Direct sessions carrying identifiable AI traces. Testing 632 comparisons of AI-visibility metrics against branded search and Direct traffic across four brands, he found correlations as high as 0.72 that failed to hold up against randomized control data, suggesting the pattern is likely spurious rather than causal.

Why it matters: It's one of the few attempts to directly measure, rather than infer, whether AI chatbots are quietly inflating 'Direct' traffic numbers — and it finds the Direct-traffic gains publishers have been reporting are overwhelmingly bot activity, not hidden AI referrals.
