Google ties Gmail and Photos data to ads through Personal Intelligence

What this answers

Does Google use my Gmail or Photos content to show me ads?
Only if you connect those apps to Search or Gemini through Personal Intelligence — Google's privacy policy, updated October 16, 2026, now carves out an exception to its 2021 pledge never to personalize ads using content from Drive, Gmail or Photos, per PPC Land.
Can advertisers see my Gmail inbox or Google Photos?
No — Google says advertisers still do not get direct access to a user's Gmail inbox or Photos library; ads instead draw on summaries and inferences from connected content, per Google's own help page.

Google’s privacy policy, updated October 16, now lets data from Gmail, Drive and Google Photos help shape ads for users who connect those apps to Search or Gemini through Personal Intelligence, per PPC Land, which compared the new wording against 54 earlier archived versions of the policy. The change adds an exception to a pledge Google has kept in identical wording since July 2021 — that personalized ads would never draw on content from Drive, Gmail or Photos — rather than removing it outright. Advertisers still don’t get direct access to anyone’s inbox or photo library, per Google’s help page: ads instead draw on summaries and inferences generated from connected content, not the content itself.

Why it matters: The exception ties Google's ad system to the same opt-in data access that powers Personal Intelligence in AI Mode and Search, narrowing the line the company drew in 2021 between answering a question with personal context and selling an ad against it.
