Google says AI Overview's race-based answer came from source pages
Google’s official account responded on X to complaints that an AI Overview gave different answers to near-identical searches asking whether it’s acceptable to prefer a doctor of a given race, per Search Engine Roundtable. Google said the response was “picking up particular web pages for this specific search” and was “not for all queries,” adding that its Gemini app did not produce the same answer and that “teams are looking into it.”
Why it matters: Google's rare public acknowledgment that an AI Overview's answer traced back to specific source pages underscores how directly indexed content, not just the model, still shapes what the answer box says.
