French publishers file complaint against Google AI Overviews

The Alliance de la Presse d’Information Générale (APIG), representing nearly 300 French newspapers, filed a complaint with France’s competition authority on August 11 alleging Google’s AI Overviews — launched in France in July without publisher consent — cuts referral traffic and breaches a 2022 compensation agreement for news content, per Search Engine Land. APIG president Marc Feuillée said publishers “are not seeking to halt innovation” but want “this value to be shared” through compensation for the use of their content. France fined Google €250 million in 2024 for prior non-compliance with the same agreement.

Why it matters: It adds a French competition-law track to the publisher pushback against AI Overviews, alongside the UK CMA's opt-out order and Google's own antitrust appeal in the US.
