Google AI Overviews test drops Show more button, defaults to AI Mode
Google is testing an AI Overview that loads its full AI-generated answer by default, without a “Show more” click, and opens the follow-up “Ask anything” box automatically — pushing organic results further down the page. Chris Long first spotted the test on X on August 27; Search Engine Roundtable’s Barry Schwartz said he could replicate it but that Google had not responded to a request for comment.
Why it matters: Removing the click that separates an AI Overview from AI Mode would make the fuller, more AI Mode-like answer the default experience rather than an opt-in one, pushing organic results further down the page for affected queries.
