TJ Digital study: AI-cited pages more often open with a direct answer

What this answers

Do pages cited by AI answer the question in their first lines?
More often than pages that weren't cited, per TJ Digital: in blind ratings, 20% of cited pages opened with a direct answer against 5% of Google top-10 pages the AI never pulled up, and 23% against 14% for pages pulled up but not cited.
What do pages cited by ChatGPT and Google AI have in common?
TJ Digital found cited pages more often had the year in the title (over twice the odds), a recent publish or update date (88% higher odds), tables (69%) and first-hand experience (45%). It describes these as associations, not causes.

TJ Digital, an SEO and generative engine optimization agency, analysed 193,507 answers from ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and AI Overviews for 78 client businesses (collected weekly, Aug 27 to Oct 21, 2026, tracked through Peec AI), per its published study and Search Engine Journal’s write-up. In blind ratings of 195 page pairs, 20% of cited pages opened with a direct answer against 5% of Google top-10 pages the AI never pulled up; in an earlier round comparing cited pages with pages the same answer retrieved but didn’t cite, the split was 23% to 14%. Half of the passed-over pages never answered the question in the part raters read, against 23% of cited pages.

The study also reports odds of being cited, adjusted for each site’s Ahrefs Domain Rating and page type, across 21,874 cited and 4,507 passed-over pages for 434 questions: a year in the title carried more than twice the odds, a publish or update date in the past 12 months 88% higher, tables 69%, first-hand experience 45% and prices 28%. Pages with an author byline had 28% lower odds and pages with a call to action 12% lower; the author says he can’t explain either. TJ Digital sells SEO and GEO services and states the findings are associations, not proof that any trait causes a citation. Its keywords are a stand-in for the questions asked, and the Google ranking data is a single snapshot.

Why it matters: It is a large, methodology-disclosed look at how cited pages differ from passed-over ones, and its own caveat matters: opening with the answer separates cited pages from ignored ones far more than from pages the AI retrieved and still skipped.
