SerpApi's AppTrail tracks app store rankings and AI citations
AppTrail, an open-source tool from SerpApi, tracks where an app ranks in the Apple App Store and Google Play while logging whether Google AI Mode, Google AI Overviews, and Bing Copilot mention or link to it, per a September 30 post on SerpApi’s blog. It runs locally via Python 3.11+ or in Docker and draws on SerpApi’s own search API, which includes 250 free credits a month — enough, SerpApi says, for about five weekly tracking runs across two stores, three countries, and three AI sources.
All three AI sources AppTrail covers are run by Google or Microsoft; the tool does not track mentions in ChatGPT or Perplexity, two of the most commonly cited AI answer engines elsewhere in the AI-visibility market.
Why it matters: It extends AI-visibility tracking, usually sold as a SaaS dashboard, into a self-hosted open-source tool, though its AI coverage stops at Google and Bing.
