Ahrefs: AI citation stability study finds half of citations vanish within a day, most return

What this answers

How often do AI citations disappear the next day?
In Ahrefs' 20-day tracking of websites cited on day one, 50% of citations on Google AI Overviews, 58% on AI Mode and 59% on ChatGPT were gone by day two; Gemini (81%) and Copilot (83%) were higher, partly because their next answers often cited no one.
Do lost AI citations come back?
Often. Ahrefs found roughly 75% of citations that disappeared at least once returned within the 20-day study, and about half of those returned within three days.
Do backlinks help AI citations last longer?
Ahrefs found little link to Domain Rating or backlinks. On AI Overviews, pages cited for 15+ days had a median of 88 monthly organic visits versus 8 for one-day citations, though Ahrefs calls this correlation, not cause.

Ahrefs published a study on AI citation stability on Oct. 29, 2026. Its colleague Xibeijia Guan asked five AI tools the same questions daily for 20 days and followed every website cited on day one: 18,009 on Google AI Mode, 11,225 on ChatGPT, 4,830 on Google AI Overviews, 1,994 on Gemini and 1,447 on Copilot. Ahrefs says it checked the pattern against questions it tracks in its own Brand Radar product.

  • Gone by day two: 50% on AI Overviews, 58% on AI Mode, 59% on ChatGPT, 81% on Gemini, 83% on Copilot. Gemini and Copilot returned no citations at all in 64% and 53% of answers; excluding empty answers, Ahrefs puts all five tools at 50–60%.
  • Came back: roughly 75% of citations that disappeared at least once returned within the 20 days, about half within three days. Only 20–27% of day-one citations disappeared and never returned, depending on the tool.
  • Longer-held citations return more: citations that lasted 8–14 days before dropping never came back 0.7–4% of the time on AI Overviews, AI Mode and ChatGPT, against 34–41% for one-day citations.
  • Lasted all 20 days: 6.6% on AI Overviews, 6.8% on AI Mode, 4.0% on ChatGPT.

Ahrefs also reports that pages cited for 15+ days on AI Overviews had a median of 88 estimated monthly organic visits against 8 for one-day citations, while Domain Rating (typically 64–78) and backlinks made little difference. The ranking analysis covered 230 questions, and Ahrefs describes all of this as correlation. It also says brand mentions are more stable than website citations and may be a better KPI. Ahrefs sells AI visibility tracking, so this is a vendor-published study.

Why it matters: Citation presence is a distribution that churns daily, not a position that is held, so a single day's check of "are we cited" measures noise as much as visibility.
